One number is an incomplete picture

A player’s total points or goals offer an incomplete measure without playing time. Possession percentage alone cannot explain where a team passed or why. The first question is not which number is larger, but which question that number actually answers. Context makes a comparison useful.

Conditions for comparison

When comparing performances, note playing time, opposition, conditions and player roles. A short period can magnify unusual outcomes. Read the source’s definitions too: similarly named measures may use different calculations. A chart without a source or a clear time period is weak evidence, however convincing its design appears.

Combine data with observation

Turn an observation into a question: is the team losing passes under pressure, or attempting them in difficult areas? Then examine an appropriate measure across several fixtures where possible. Statistics describe past performance; they do not make future outcomes certain. This is the distinction we use when discussing numbers in TRBET sports content.
